Fun to watch, fun to bet on Win the dream of Amagasaki

Amagasaki Boat Races

The Amagasaki Boat Races are a form of public gambling in Japan, and consist of 6 boats performing 3 laps per race. You can choose to bet on who will be the winner, or who will come 1st, 2nd and 3rd for even higher dividends. Bets are placed in units of \100, and all you have to do is select your favorites on a betting card. There are 12 races per day, and demonstration races are performed beforehand, allowing you to try and pick out the strongest contestants from the way they handle their boats and the roar of their engines. The races are managed by the cities of Amagasaki and Itami, with all proceeds going towards public projects. There are also locally run food stalls within the area, selling a variety of tasty treats.

In the summer you can take a dip in the outdoor pool “Amalago”, and enjoy the River Ride waterslide — which is 13 meters tall and 109 meters in length — as well as the wave pool. Water depth is less than 1 meter, making it safe even for small children. An ice skating rink is open from October through to May, with skates sized between 15cm & 30cm available for rent.

Mukogawa Bon Festival Dance

Every year in August, parks and other open spaces throughout Japan are filled with music as Bon festival dances are held throughout Japan. The dance sees young and old alike don Yukata — a type of summer kimono — to dance to a particular rhythm known as “ondo”. This spectacle is perfect for experiencing Japanese culture, with Amagasaki’s largest Bon dance being held between August 23 and 25 at Mukogawa Kasenjiki Park (close to the east exit of Hanshin Mukogawa station). Festivities are held between 18:30–22:00. Why not join in and experience the real Japan?
